The Origin of Tofu

Even if you’re a tofu lover–or ‘tofan’ as we call them–are you aware of its history?

Tofu has been around for thousands of years. Originating in China, it was most likely created during the Han Dynasty. Legend has it that a Chinese cook accidentally curdled soy milk when he added nigari seaweed, and thus created a primitive form of what we now call tofu.

Tofu was favored throughout Asia, however during the 1960s, western nations became interested in healthy eating and tofu exploded in popularity. Recipes for tofu have been refined and researchers have identified a plethora of health benefits.

How is Tofu Made?

In order to make tofu, you need soy milk.

To make soy milk, start with dried soybeans that have been fully saturated in water, then grind the soybeans and cook down the liquid mixture. Once the soy milk is prepared, the key ingredient, nigari, is added and mixed completely to achieve the desired firmness.

Finally, the tofu is cut into blocks and any excess water is squeezed out.

Then, you are left with the tasty tofu that everyone knows and loves.

Tofu Reduces Heart Issues

Not only does tofu have a fascinating background, it also has multiple health benefits to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle. Soybeans and soybean byproducts, such as tofu, have been shown to help prevent heart disease by keeping your heart healthy and protected.

Isoflavones, phytoestrogens, and antioxidant compounds are often found in tofu and contain anti-inflammatory properties.
