5 Tips for a Successful Deep Sea Fishing Trip
What You’ll Need to Make Your Next Deep Sea Fishing Trip in North Florida a Success
Surrounded by water on (almost) all sides, Florida is home to a multitude of fishing spots. Among them are several deep sea fishing locations that are ideal for your next adventure on the water. Sailing on the beautiful waters of Northeast Florida is a great way to get outdoors, soak up some sun and relieve stress, and fishing is a fun activity the whole family can enjoy. Several companies around Amelia Island offer guided deep sea fishing charters that make it easy to have the best experience possible out on the water. However, for the do-it-yourselfer, we’ve put together a list of our five top tips that you’ll want to keep in mind when planning your next trip.
Tip 1: Dress for (Fishing) Success
As with any outdoor adventure, it’s important to wear clothes that are both comfortable and will protect your skin form the powerful Florida sun. Though of course the weather and temperature will impact your choice, it’s always best to be prepared: Rain gear is essential to keep you dry and a windbreaker always comes in handy for chilly mornings and evenings. Layering long sleeve shirts, shorts and tees will help keep your head and skin cool. Of course, sunglasses, hats and sunscreen are also must-haves.
Tip 2: Get Your Permits In Order
If you’re planning to set sail here in Northeast Florida, you’ll need a fishing permit. These can be purchased online and everyone over the age of 16 must have one. The one exception is if you’ll be heading out on a charter boat - a fishing license is not required on chartered excursions.
Tip 3: Don’t Forget First Aid
Having a first aid kit on deck is an important part of making sure your deep sea fishing trip is safe for everyone. If you or someone you are fishing with is likely to get seasick, be sure to bring some motion sickness medication on board. Extra band-aids, hand sanitizer, gauze and more are also important to stock up on. Keep it all in a waterproof case to ensure you’re prepared for anything.
Tip 4: Read Up on Seasonal Fish
As you might expect, the fish swimming off our shores will vary seasonally. Here in Northeast Florida, you may see the “smoker” kingfish, troll ribbonfish and Florida tarpon fish, among plenty of others. A Florida fish species seasonal calendar will fill you in on what’s biting so you can bring the right line, hooks and gear.
Tip 5: Don’t Deep Sea Fish on an Empty Stomach
Being in the sun all day means it’s vital that you stay hydrated. Bringing insulated bottles or a cooler full of ice water will make sure you always have something refreshing to sip on. Of course, you’re also going to work up an appetite. Sandwiches are a quick and portable option that the whole crew will enjoy. Don’t feel like making your own?
