What is Keto?
A keto (aka ketogenic diet) is a very low-carb diet, high-fat diet. Some nutritionists say that it can lower the blood sugar and insulin levels by shifting the carb intake and replacing it with fat, which puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis.
The keto diet was originally designed to help people who suffer from seizure disorders, since ketones and another chemical produced by the diet, called decanoic acid, may help minimize seizures. Findings from people trying this diet showed weight-loss, which spurred the keto diet movement.
What is Paleo?
The paleo diet follows a regime of eating foods that were consumed during the Paleolithic era 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago.
This diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — foods that in the Paleolithic era could be found by hunting and gathering. A paleo diet thus limits the foods that became common when farming emerged about 10,000 years ago, which include dairy, legumes and grains such as rice.
