Everything You Need to Know About the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

The History of Baseball in Jacksonville

Jacksonville's baseball story began in 1904. At first, the Jacksonville Jays were a member of the South Atlantic League. They were winners from the start. The first game at Dixieland Park was a thrilling 1-0 win against Macon. The Jays' won championships in 1908 and 1912, solidifying their place in sports history.

Today, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp continue this tradition at 121 Financial Ballpark. Every game is a celebration of the city's rich baseball heritage. The excitement on the field spills into the stands and out onto the streets of the city. The Jumbo Shrimp are more than a team – they represent the heart of Jacksonville!

Watch Big Leaguers Get Their Start

Over the years, the Jumbo Shrimp have helped to catapult the careers of some very notable players. Currently an affiliate of the Miami Marlins, they have served as a farm team for 11 major league clubs.

One of the most famous players to don the Jumbo Shrimp cap is Randy Johnson. He was a powerful pitcher who played with the Jumbo Shrimp, when they were called the Suns in the late 1980s. Johnson went on to record over 300 wins as a pitcher and almost 5,000 strikeouts. Another standout is Alex Rodriguez, who also started his career with the Jumbo Shrimp. He became one of the best hitters ever with over 3,000 career hits. In his career, Rodriguez won a Silver Slugger Award, two Gold Gloves, and two American League MVPs.

Fridays are extra special at 121 Financial Ballpark. The stands turn red as players, staff, and fans come together to support our troops! Wear red to save $1 on tickets at the box office or donate that dollar to charity. And don't miss out on the postgame fireworks that light up the sky after every Friday home game! It's a fantastic way to celebrate and show your spirit for both baseball and our military heroes.

The Jumbo Shrimp’s Community Impact

The impact of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp goes beyond the baseball field. They visit local schools and organize youth sports programs and community events. Every year, the Jumbo Shrimp organize the Chevy Youth Baseball Clinic. Kids aged 7-14 can get free training at this event. Thanks to grants and subsidies, it doesn't cost anything to attend!
