Hometown Hero Makes Fernandina Beach Proud

The Paris Olympics were extra special thanks to Poe Pinson, born and raised in Fernandina Beach, competing in the skateboarding competition.

Locals, who have seen Poe practicing at the Main Beach Skate Park for years, were caught up in Olympic fever.

An Unforgettable Olympic Performance

At 19 years old, Poe is one of the youngest athletes on the American team. But she didn’t let her age stop her from making a major splash on the global stage. The Fernandina favorite cruised through the qualifying rounds and arrived at the La Concorde Urban Park in Paris with her sights set on Gold.

She delivered a gutsy performance with a 50.18 in the run and 83.73 and a stellar 88.43 for her trick scores. The combined total of 222.34 was enough to put her in fifth place. It might have been short of a medal, but Poe left no doubt she is one of the best skaters in the world. Based on the reaction from watch parties across Florida, it was easy to see the impact of her achievement.

Small Town, Big Heart

There has been an outpouring of support for Poe and the entire Pinson family leading up to and during the Olympics. From “Go, Poe!” signs to fundraising efforts for the Main Beach Skate Park, thousands of dollars have been raised to help Poe on her Olympic journey.

The best part about all of this?

The Pinsons have not once asked for any financial support – this is all coming from the incredible members of our community.

Attend the Olympic Homecoming Parade in August

Even though the Olympics in Paris close on August 11th, the celebration keeps on rolling on Amelia Island! Mark your calendars for Friday, August 16th when the whole town is coming out at the Olympic Homecoming Parade to welcome home Poe Pinson.

We want to show our appreciation for all of her hard work, so make sure to make signs, bring noisemakers, and wear your best red, white, and blue outfits.

The parade is hosted by the Friends of Fernandina Skatepark, where Poe first learned to skate. It will be a busy week for the non-profit. The 9th Annual Terry Kelly Skate Contest will be held on Saturday, August 24th. All ages are welcome to register!
