Wild-Caught, Sustainable Seafood in North Florida

National Seafood Month is October, and what better way to celebrate than chowing down on sustainable and delicious coastal dishes from our oceans. Sustainable food has a variety of health benefits and can lower environmental impacts in the sea. It ensures that fisheries can continue to thrive in their marine and freshwater habitats. North Florida offers a variety of sustainable seafood options, including here at Timoti’s on Amelia Island and in Nocatee.

It’s simple: healthy fish create a healthy ocean habitat. A healthy ocean is a happy world. The need to maintain sustainable fishing is extremely important in our day and age, especially due to the high demand of seafood worldwide.

But what is sustainable seafood mean, really? Sustainable fishing is free from antibiotics, growth hormones and chemicals. The difference between sustainable seafood and farm-raised involves the diet and the living conditions.

Wild-caught seafood live in freshwater, migrate to the ocean and then return to their original home to lay eggs. Their diet generally consists of invertebrates such as plankton, eel and shrimp. Contrasting, farm-raised seafood have processed, high-fat protein meals to increase the size of the fish. Eating naturally-raised seafood is better for you because you are eating what the fish is eating (wild-caught seafood are high in protein and contain fewer toxins than farm-raised fish).

Health Benefits

Yummy and healthy? You got that right! Sustainable fish are high in proteins, vitamins and minerals, making it a healthier choice for your body. These fish also contain low amounts of harmful chemicals and fat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are polyunsaturated fats that are found in salmon, and are known to provide an amazing health boost. These fats can help prevent heart disease and strokes.

Add More Seafood to your Diet

Fall doesn’t just mark National Seafood Month, but is also the start to cooler weather. A great way to celebrate is with hearty and warm dishes such as soups and stews. (Timoti’s bread bowls are a mouthwatering option for a power-packed combo). Add sustainable seafood to any dish – there are a variety to choose from, and a plenty of seafood options to celebrate all-year around.
