Tales of the Dry Tortugas

Before it became a national park, the coast of Florida was shrouded in tales of pirates, turbulent waters, and stolen treasure. In the 1600s and 1700s, the Straits of Florida established a route for Spanish treasure ships sailing between Cuba and Florida, becoming a prime hunting ground for pirates. These notorious buccaneers roamed the high seas, leaving a legacy of fear and intrigue. As time passed, a new breed of treasure seekers emerged, known as "wreckers." These skilled individuals made a living salvaging cargo from sunken ships, and their trade became so profitable and regulated that it transformed Key West into one of the wealthiest cities in Florida by the 19th century.

Although pirates and wreckers no longer roam the waters around Dry Tortugas, the allure of hidden treasure still beckons to those who dare to seek it. Even in modern times, treasure hunters have been lured by the possibility of uncovering riches lost to the depths of the sea. In 1985, a remarkable discovery was made when treasure hunters salvaged an astounding $450 million worth of silver. The legends of the Florida pirates, tales of turbulent waters, and rumors of stolen treasure may have faded into the past, but their echoes still resonate, inviting adventurous souls to explore and discover the mysteries beneath the waves.

Tales of the Haunted Lake Lanier

Swim at Your Own Risk. Lake Lanier, Georgia, differs from your typical swimming destination. While its vast expanse of 38,000 acres and over 600 miles of shoreline make it seem like a natural paradise, it has a dark history that demands caution. Since 1994, over 200 people have tragically lost their lives in swimming and boating accidents outside designated areas, making it one of the most dangerous lakes in the region. Adding to its eerie reputation is the legend of Lake Lanier being cursed, as it was created by flooding valley communities that contained a cemetery.

Some believe that the unmarked graves and structures swallowed by the lake have caused paranormal occurrences. One popular urban legend tells the story of a car wreck in 1958 where a Ford sedan carrying two women plunged into the lake. It is said that the ghost of one of those women, known as the "Lady of the Lake," can be seen wandering the bridge at night in a haunting blue dress, forever lost and restless. So, if you are venturing to Lake Lanier, be aware of the risks and respect the mysteries surrounding this enchanting yet treacherous body of water.

The Pittee Girls of Anastasia Island

St. Augustine, a charming coastal town in Florida, holds the distinction of being the location of the very first lighthouse established by the American Government in 1824. This historic site, nestled on the enchanting Anastasia Island, beckons adventurers from far and wide. Amidst the tales of its grandeur, one particular story stands out, etching the bravery of Mr. Dan Sessions into the annals of heroism. On the fateful day of July 10, 1873, tragedy struck as the three Pittee sisters, Mary, Eliza, and Carrie, along with their young African-American companion, embarked on their usual cart ride.

However, fate took a cruel turn when the wooden board meant to prevent the cart from entering the water was absent. The cart tumbled into the depths, trapping the girls beneath it. In the midst of this harrowing scene, Mr. Dan Sessions, a diligent worker on the premises, witnessed the calamity unfold before his eyes. Without a moment's hesitation, he dashed towards the water. Summoning every ounce of his strength, he lifted the heavy cart, freeing the girls from its suffocating grip. Tragically, three of the girls had already succumbed to the merciless waters, leaving only young Carrie as the sole survivor. Some still say that the girls' spirits arrive when tourists walk around the shores and the lighthouse tour, but they aren’t the only ones watching you…

In the 145 years since the tragic accident that claimed the lives of the young girls, eerie happenings have continued to be linked to their spirits. Legends and stories have spread far and wide, drawing curious visitors to the lighthouse. If you are brave enough, venture forth and explore this historic landmark, for it is said that the girls' spirits still linger here. Fear not, for these friendly spirits may just become your ghostly companions, guiding you through the mysteries of the sea. So, take advantage of the opportunity to embark on this supernatural adventure, where you might make a ghostly friend at sea.
