Being from Florida, we have a special place in our hearts for the friendly creatures of the sea. From “Crush” in Finding Nemo, to the classic crew of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, these delicate little guys have captured the attention of young and old through the decades.

Did you know that they also play a crucial role in maintaining the ocean ecosystems as well as providing habitats for other marine life and balancing the food chain? Sadly, over half of Earth’s 335 known turtle species are either vulnerable, threatened, or endangered with extinction. Because of this, it is important for all of us to do our part and allow them to flourish in their natural environment, without any human interruptions. Participating in beach clean ups and using reusable shopping bags and water bottles are just a few ways to help! Check out what turtle species you can expect to find around Florida.

Turtles Evolved 300 Million Years Ago

The first hypothesis of the species was that turtles were similar to the body structure of crocodiles and birds. However, the second hypothesis suggested that the turtles were more alike to lizards and snakes. Finally, a third guess signified that the turtles arose from anapsids, any species who lacks a skull opening near the temples. Now, they belong to a reptile group along with tortoises and terrapins.

A Turtle’s Diet Depends on Their Environment

Turtles that are land-dwellers have a diet of beetles, fruit and grass while sea-dwelling turtles will eat squid, algae and jellyfish. Did you know that turtles start out as carnivores, but eat more plants as they mature? Veg-lovers unite! If an older turtle found it’s way into Timoti’s Seafood Shak they’d be happy to chow down on a salad or soy tacos!

Turtles Don’t Have Teeth

That’s right, no dentures for these little guys. Instead, they use their break-like mouth made up of keratin to grasp food. Keratin is the same stuff your fingernails are made of!

Turtles Always Return Home

Turtles will bury their own eggs and hatch them in the sand ‘nests’. Be cautious if a turtle is passing by on the road – it is advised to not disturb their journey as they venture back, as they may get confused if they are moved or taken to a new location. They are determined creatures and will return back to their home even it is miles away.
