Climb Boneyard Beach at Big Talbot Island

We know. We know. Climb a beach? What could we be talking about? Okay, so maybe we're cheating a little. You do have to walk on the shore. But this beach is a natural jungle gym waiting for you to let your inner child free.

Boneyard Beach is dotted with massive trees perfect for climbing. These fallen trees have been transformed by the elements, bleached white by the sun, and smoothed by wind and rain. Now you know where the beach gets its haunting name. The trees have an important role in protecting the Jacksonville coastline, acting as a buffer against the powerful force of hurricanes and slowing erosion.

These majestic remains have an eerie beauty about them. Whether sightseeing or racing to find out who can reach the top of these giants the quickest, you won't want to miss this unforgettable experience.

Go Kayaking at Big Talbot Island

Get close up and personal to Florida's wildlife with this water-loving activity. Inspired to educate people about the importance of Florida's salt marshes, the founders of Kayak Amelia, provide guided tours that teach visitors about these vibrant ecosystems. You can join this aquatic adventure by booking a tour or renting kayaks and paddle boards for a self-guided experience.

Get ready to spot local bird species, like herons, egrets, and ibises. Count how many sunbathing alligators you find. And keep your eyes peeled for marsh rabbits. (Yes, they do exist!)
Remember to always respect the surrounding wildlife and view these spectacular animals from a safe distance.

Wildlife Watching at Big Talbot Island

Bust your camera out and get ready to snap documentary-worthy photos. Big Talbot Island is a picture-perfect spot that is bustling with life. With such a diverse array of wildlife, you'll have no trouble finding mammals, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates of all kinds. We're talking about deer, bobcats, blue crabs, owls, hawks, gopher tortoises, fiddler crabs… the list keeps going. You might even catch a glimpse of the playful river otters.

You can walk the white sand shores of the beach or hike in the tranquil maritime forest. Either way, Big Talbot Island has plenty of animals to find. Each sighting of these striking creatures will create memories that last a lifetime.

Bonus: Hunt for shark teeth. You've already got your eyes peeled, so why not look for ancient fossils? It's common for visitors to find teeth from tiger sharks, white sharks, and bull sharks. If you're really lucky, you might get your hands on a megalodon tooth! Searching after a storm and at low tide is best to increase your chances of success.
